Education

Councilor Louijeune knows there is work needed to achieve equity and excellence in all of our public schools while creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for our students.

As part of her work on the Boston City Council, Councilor Louijeune stood up for our public school students by showing up in communities and supporting legislation that include:

Promote student safety, security, and well-being

  • Advocate for mental health resources. Councilor Louijeune has championed increased mental health resources and guidance staff to support students’ social and emotional needs. She has also opposed adding more law enforcement in schools and worked with Boston Public Schools (BPS) to secure more funding for counselors.

  • Re-evaluate conflict resolution programming. The Councilor co-sponsored a hearing order to review the success of restorative justice programs in BPS, which provide an alternative approach to conflict resolution.

  • Uplift diverse identities in the classroom. Councilor Louijeune co-sponsored a resolution to ensure that BPS can better support the needs of our Muslim students, allowing them to flourish at school.

  • Prioritize safe transportation options. The Councilor partnered with Mass. Safe Routes to School and the Boston Transportation Department in Bike & Walk to School Day. She greeted students at the Curley in Jamaica Plain and the Mildred in Mattapan, where she heard firsthand about students’ academic experience and commute.

Councilor Louijeune is proud to honor the many achievements of our Boston Public School Students, including their graduation and transition into post-secondary life.

Prioritize high-quality and accessible education

  • Address barriers in our public school system. The Councilor co-sponsored a hearing to discuss creating partnerships between colleges and high schools. Our Black and Brown students face disproportionate educational barriers and setting our students up for postgraduate success will support thriving communities across the city.

  • Strengthen Curriculum. The Councilor co-sponsored a hearing order to establish a pilot program for a Climate Change and Environmental Justice Curriculum in BPS that educates students on climate change while empowering them to consider professional and academic opportunities within environmental fields.

Councilor Louijeune was honored to celebrate the opening of the new Henderson Upper schoolyard with our students. As Boston supports our students in their learning, the City must also create ample space and facilities for their education.

Support teachers, administrators, and families

  • Advocate for better salaries for teachers and staff. Whether that be demanding BPS employees receive overdue and contractually-obligated back pay or advocating for the increase in COLA base pay for our retired teachers, Councilor Louijeune knows our teachers, school counselors, and support staff deserve to live with dignity and professional support.

  • Supporting parent programming. The Councilor co-sponsored a resolution in support of funding for the BPS Parent Mentor Program. Councilor Louijeuene recognizes that supporting not only students, but also their families and mentors, is essential to student success.

  • Cultivate relationships in the educational field. Councilor Louijeune has connected with residents and community leaders in the education space through constituent service efforts leading to partnership with BPS leadership and opportunities to address critical safety and resource issues.

  • Increase language accessibility. The Councilor co-sponsored an order for a hearing to discuss how BPS is addressing the needs of parents of English language learner students. Like Councilor Louijeune, many of our students have parents that are first-generation immigrants, and ensuring they have access to information is critical to the success of their students.

Councilor Louijeune celebrated Women’s History Month with the Boston Teacher’s Union. Supporting Boston Public School students means supporting the challenging and essential work of school educators and staff.
