Jobs and Economic Opportunity
Councilor Louijeune believes that prioritizing the growth of Boston small businesses, supporting unions and the rights of Boston’s workers, and encouraging further job growth and creation is essential to the economic vibrancy of the City of Boston.
During her past two terms on the Council, Councilor Louijeune has worked to:
Uplift Small Businesses
Advocate for small businesses in Nubian Square. After learning of an effort by a developer to displace local businesses in Nubian Square, Councilor Louijeune has been working hard to prevent displacement with ACEDONE and Lawyers for Civil Rights. The Councilor knows that our small businesses contribute greatly to our city’s vibrancy and shouldn’t be threatened by companies seeking to alter the fabric of their neighborhood.
Promote Boston’s Art-based Businesses. The Councilor co-sponsored an order for a hearing on creating a Fairmount Avenue Arts and Culture District. Fairmount Avenue in Hyde Park is currently home to a diverse arts scene and supporting the further development of these businesses and organizations will bring economic and community benefits to the neighborhood.
Prioritize local nightlife. After successfully advocating for additional liquor licenses in Boston, the Councilor co-sponsored a hearing in the application process for 225 new liquor licenses in the City. As of June 2025, 21 of the new liquor licenses have been granted to businesses in neighborhoods including Dorchester, Roxbury, and West Roxbury, which will further invest in local small businesses and continue to close the wealth gap across Boston neighborhoods.
Alongside Councilor Worrell and Mayor Wu, Councilor Louijeune fought for the expansion of liquor license access in Boston. By supporting small local businesses in their applications, we increase investment in our residential neighborhoods and create opportunities for new restaurants and community spaces to thrive.
Fight for Workers’ Rights
Recognize essential healthcare workers. Councilor Louijeune co-sponsored a resolution in support of the Mass General Brigham Primary Care Physician union. Recognizing the prominent role that interns, residents, and fellows at Mass General Brigham play, the Councilor also co-sponsored a resolution supporting their unionization and work for better benefits and hours.
Uplift our city’s educators and students. The Councilor co-sponsored a resolution in support of the Boston University Grad Workers bargaining for a livable wage, affordable healthcare, and adequate hours.
Support our home care workers. Recognizing the challenging and essential work of our home care workers, the Councilor offered a resolution supporting their work for a fair contract and compensation.
Councilor Louijeune joined in support of Mass General Brigham “housestaff” who provide essential work in the city’s healthcare system as interns, residents, and fellows and sought fair rights to unionization.
Increase Access to Professional Opportunities
Assess Employment Equity. The Councilor co-sponsored a hearing on reviewing the Boston Residents Jobs Policy (BRJP), which requires construction projects to hire Boston residents, people of color, and women. Ensuring that this policy remains equitable and accurate in its inclusion of Boston residents is essential to preserving accessible job opportunities.
Jobs and Economic Opportunities play a key role in the budget:
